Abstract

Since the establishment of trade unions at academic institutions, they have become role players in all spheres of the institutional functioning, such as human resources issues, wellness in the workplace, the formulation of new workplace policies, several management issues and the financial sustainability of the institution. It is of cardinal importance to have a stable workforce in the workplace, in order to improve the academic and support services standards of the institution and thus to maintain financial sustainability. Therefore, trade unions should fulfill two important roles i.e.: a supportive role of management, whilst at the same time being a watch dog to ensure equity, equality and fairness in all spheres. The management of an institution should recognize the benefits of supportive unions in the work place for mutual gains and a “win-win” work environment. This implies a high degree of trust in all matters of the institution’s functioning.
