Abstract

Job performance is one of the most frequently studied outcomes in the work–family conflict and job satisfaction literature. This study extends the previous research examining the unique effects of job satisfaction and work-family conflict on job performance of hotel managers in Sri Lanka. The study also examined the contribution of gender and age in job satisfaction and work-family conflict. The study was carried out in both classified and unclassified hotels in Colombo district. Responses from a sample of 72 managers were analyzed in the study. Results indicated that job satisfaction levels of managers are moderate and work-family conflict levels are high. Correlation analysis indicated that job satisfaction was positively and significantly correlated with job performance and work-family conflict was negatively and significantly correlated withjob performance. A number of gender related differences emerged. Influence of gender and age were significant on the level of work-family conflict and job satisfaction. Women managers experienced higher work-family conflict than male managers and that male managers experienced higher job satisfaction than female managers. The study revealed that there is an impact of job satisfaction and work-family conflict on job performance of managers. These findings have to be considered while initiating an atmosphere for enhancing performance of managers. Implications for enhancing job performance of managers in the industry and areas for further research are discussed.
