Abstract

Data are presented on deforestation since the J 95 Os, much of it due to illegalcultivation, including lea planting on steep slopes without adequate soilconservationprecautions. The effects of deforestation on the soil and hydrologyare discussed. Proposed remedial measures are centred 011 a participatoryapproach. involving NGOs and extension work.
