Abstract

The study extends the recent contention that individual attributes can have an impact on contextual and task performance (CTP). Outcome behaviors such as commitment, cooperation, trust, extra-role behavior etc. are associated with unique individual attributes and orientations and contextual performance. This study proposes to examine the level of and orientation towards CTP Sri Lankan manufacturing sector employees and the impact that individual demographic variables have on these performance criteria. Data were obtained through a questionnaire survey in a sample of 487 employees. Supervisory-rating of subordinates' CTP was used as a supplementary method to self-rated CTP. The findings indicate that the level of contextual performance is moderate and it is oriented towards both task and interpersonal relationships. The impact analysis indicates that all the Demographic factors (gender, age, employment category, and the level of education, and the tenure) have a significant impact on one category of CTP; that is contextual performance towards task. The evidence reveals that unique individual attribute variables can act as sources that enhance performance at work. It has a number of implications for practicing managers and the individual attributes theories of CTP.
