AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF THE IMPACT OF INTRINSIC MOTIVATION ON ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO BANK MANAGERS IN THREE PUBLIC SECTOR BANKS IN THE WESTERN PROVINCE OF SRI LANKA

Abstract

The banks of public sector as the major component of banking system contribute a lot to the economic growth and prosperity in Sri Lanka. There are two major divisions of employees in the banking sector of Sri Lanka. They are called managerial and non-managerial employees. The roles played by managers are essentially important for operating the banks efficiently. With today’s work, motivational issues are more complex and demanding as the work is more psychologically demanding in terms of complexity and requires much energy from the employees. Intrinsic motivation is important to keep energy level of workers to contribute productivity and success at work (Thomas, 2001). The specific problem addressed in the study was to examine the impact of intrinsic motivation on organizational commitment. It considered sense of meaningfulness, sense of determination, sense of interest, sense of progress, sense of competence, effort, sense of pressure / tension as determinants of intrinsic motivation. Data were collected through a survey using a questionnaire from 150 managers selected from three public sector bank organizations covering fifty-one branch offices. Data analyzed revealed a positive correlation between intrinsic motivation and organizational commitment among the bank managers in public sector bank organizations. Influence of age, work experience and educational qualifications were significant on the level of intrinsic motivation. The study revealed that there is an impact of intrinsic motivation on organizational commitment of managers. These findings have to be considered while initiating an atmosphere for enhancing commitment of managers.
