Abstract

In this paper, an attempt is made to define and analyse the competitiveness of small business units. Global competitiveness is essential for the success of any firm in the liberalized economy. Based on the literature survey and discussions with professionals and academicians a conceptual model on competitiveness of the small business has been developed. The model consists of five dimensions of competitiveness namely organizational scope, organizational capabilities, entrepreneurial competencies, competitive process and organizational performance. The major tasks of the entrepreneur are forming competitive scope, creating organizational capabilities and setting goals, systems, procedures and standards of performances for competitive process. Though performance depends on the effectiveness and efficiency of first four dimensions, it interesting to note that consistent and good long-term performance is essential to ensure competitiveness and this in turn enhances organizational capabilities and organizational scope. An attempt is made to analyze the interrelations between these dimensions. Hypotheses regarding the relationships between these dimensions of competitiveness are made.
