RESEMBLANCE AND DIVERGENCE VIEWS OF CAUSES OF WORKERS’ GRIEVANCES: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY ON MANUFACTURING SECTOR

Abstract

In the context of achieving the development objectives of the third world countries, individuals in such countries play a vital role. Usually human capital has unique characteristics compared to other resources. However, in these attempts to utilize human capital effectively and efficiently, many problems could be identified. Among these hurdles, grievance is a much common barricade. This is also a very redeemable problem in the manufacturing sector currently in Sri Lanka. The structures of the manufacturing sector in Sri Lanka are not similar. Then, their jobs are not similar also. Subsequently in this context, there is a problem that whether there is a resemblance or divergence situations for causes of employee grievances in this sector.  This study is therefore, focused to find out the similar causes of worker grievances and dissimilar causes of worker grievances in the manufacturing sector in Sri Lanka. The sample of the study was limited to 500 non-managerial workers who were selected from ten different manufacturing organizations. Standard questionnaire is the major method used to gather primary data and external reliability of 30 questions in the questionnaire were between the ranges of 0.75 and 0.93. Basically, descriptive statistics were used to analyse data. The empirical findings of the study are; there are no resemblance situations of causes of worker grievances in this sector. There are few causes like salary, physical facilities, supervisor’s leadership, which are resemblance causes of grievances while others are not resemblance causes among the workers in this sector.   Therefore, as a conclusion, the researcher recommends to use individual attention or strategy to solve employee grievances in this sector rather than common strategies.
