Abstract

Short story cycle is a new genre that is in between the two, neither a short story nor a novel. The first short story cycle that was consciously written based on the genre purpose of the short story cycle in the Sinhala short story field was Rasa Polawa written by Prabath Jayasinghe. The research problem of this study was "What are the creative peculiarities of the Rasa Polawa short story cycle?". The main objective was to identify the creative peculiarities of Rasa Polawa in accordance with the short story cycle genre. The study was conducted using qualitative research methods, through the study of primary and secondary sources. Accordingly, the potentialities expressed by the short story writer in Rasa Polawa in accordance with the genre of the short story cycle were identified here. Accordingly, the author has established the short stories in the Rasa Polawa short story cycle independently and has also been able to maintain the interrelationship between the short stories well. Due to this, each short story has an independent semantic aesthetic and a thematic dimension that is raised through the entire short story cycle can also be identified. In Rasa Polawa, formal peculiarities consistent with the short story cycle genre can also be seen. Consciously created gaps in the short stories, open endings, etc. The language used in Rasa Polawa is also excellent and elegant. The characterization is also connected to the semantic function of the short story cycle. The main conclusion of this study was that the creative peculiarities used by Prabath Jayasinghe in the Rasa Polawa short story cycle are more consistent with the characteristics of the short story cycle genre. It seems that he has written the short story cycle Rasa Polawa with a thorough study and knowledge of the new genre called short story cycle and with a specific purpose. This study will help to draw the attention of readers and critics to the short story cycle, the latest genre introduced into the Sinhala short story field through Rasa Polawa.
