Abstract

Purvaramaya is located in Habaraduwa Regional Secretariat Kathaluwa in Galle District of the Southern Province. Paintings of the lowland tradition of the Kandy period belonging to the 18th and 19th centuries can be seen in this temple. We can see the old the shrine, the Darmashala, the Chethiya, and a Bodhi tree. The Vihara Mandir is built in the middle of Vihara Malu on a high ground about one meter. The purpose of the research is to study how the special characteristics of the paintings of the southern province of the painting tradition of the Kandy period are included in the paintings of the Kataluva Purvarama. The observational study method was specially used to collect the information. Also, primary source study and secondary source study were used. The research problem was to investigate the contemporary society represented by the paintings of the Kataluva Purvarama and to examine the significance of the paintings. Graphical analysis, thematic analysis and qualitative analysis were used to investigate the information. The artist has chosen Jataka stories for temple paintings and famous stories mentioned in Buddhist literature for news paintings to give examples to the society. It was possible to conclude that the object is to create a society where good people live. The objectives are to save the Buddhist people from culture, to protect Buddhism and to continue the fellowship of the temple. Also, getting used to donating has become the purpose of the paintings. All the special features of the low country Kandy painting tradition can be seen in these temple paintings
